The Institute for Correctional Studies has been officially registered as a training centre under the National Occupational Competency Standard of the Maldives National Skills Development Authority (MNSDA).
A special ceremony was held on Sunday to mark the occasion, where Dr Zahra Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer of MNSDA, presented the registration certificate to Superintendent Ibrahim Nashid, who received it on behalf of the Institute for Correctional Studies.
During the event, participants discussed plans to introduce vocational training programmes for long-term prisoners, specialised training for Maldives Correctional Service staff, and dedicated vocational programmes for women.
According to the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, the goal of these initiatives is to ensure that inmates completing vocational skill-building programmes receive national certification, enabling them to contribute productively to society upon release.
The Maldives Correctional Service currently conducts a variety of skills development programmes for prisoners in collaboration with several government ministries, as part of broader efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate inmates through education and professional training.
