Kulhudhuffushi City — The Maldives got off to a flying start at the Commonwealth Beach Handball Championship 2025, edging past Sri Lanka 2–1 in sets during the tournament’s opening clash.
The championship, making its debut in the Maldives, kicked off today in Kulhudhuffushi City with high energy and a strong crowd presence. The event is seen as a landmark sporting moment for the island nation, hosting teams from across the Commonwealth in a celebration of beach handball.
In a closely fought contest, the Maldivian side showed grit and flair, sealing a 61–52 points win. Star performer Ahmed Razunee Mohamed led the charge with 19 points and was rightly named Player of the Match.
Sri Lanka fought hard to stay in contention, but the Maldivians proved more clinical in the decisive moments, especially during the shootout phase.
With this win, the Maldives have set the tone for their campaign, sending a clear message to rivals that they are ready to make the most of their home advantage.
