Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL), operator of the national airline Maldivian, has officially commenced construction of its new headquarters in Malé, marking the end of a 25-year wait for a unified base of operations.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on the company’s ‘Raaverige’ plot in Maafannu, at the intersection of Majeedhee Magu and Boduthakurufaanu Magu—the site of IASL’s former head office. The 12-storey office complex is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

Senior government officials and company executives attended the ceremony, including Mohamed Ameen, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation; Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure; Abdul Matheen Mohamed, Managing Director of Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC); Ibrahim Ilyas, Managing Director of IASL; Ali Saleem, Deputy Managing Director; as well as board members and staff.

IASL described the project as a “special day” in the company’s history, emphasising its role in reducing rental costs and improving efficiency by consolidating operations that are currently spread across five different buildings in Malé and the airport.

The building will span 4,745 square feet and feature a basement level for staff parking, a ticketing office on the first floor, and upper levels for administrative and operational departments. Designed as a modern, spacious facility, it will be equipped with contemporary amenities to strengthen service delivery.

Construction has been contracted to Hunan Number 6 Engineering Company of China. IASL expressed confidence that the new headquarters will not only streamline operations but also bolster the company’s ability to serve customers nationwide.
