Dhonfan Land Reclamation Project Cancelled Following Community Concerns

News
Ahmed Shurau

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the cancellation of the controversial Dhonfan land reclamation dredging project in Baa Atoll, following direct requests from the local community.

The project, initially signed during the President’s visit to Baa Atoll last August, aimed to reclaim 13 hectares from the Dhonfan lagoon. However, the plan sparked significant public concern due to its potential environmental impact on the nearby Hanifaru Bay — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the Maldives’ most renowned tourist attractions.

Environmentalists and residents widely feared that dredging would cause irreversible damage to the fragile ecosystem of Hanifaru Bay.

In a post on social media, President Dr. Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-centered governance, stressing that no island-level initiative would proceed without the consent of its community.

While noting his pledge to deliver land reclamation in Dhonfan upon community request, he clarified that the dredging project would not move forward given the shift in public opinion.

The government confirmed that the Dhonfan Island Council will be formally notified of the decision later today.

Meanwhile, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, reiterated on social media that although the dredging project has been cancelled, the administration remains committed to resolving the island’s harbour issues and strengthening shore protection.

The decision marks a significant win for community advocacy and environmental protection, highlighting a government responsive to public concerns — particularly when sensitive ecological zones are at risk.
