The Maldives has launched its first-ever certificate-level course in sign language, a landmark step toward building a more inclusive society.
The six-month programme is being offered by the Maldives National University (MNU) in partnership with the Ministry of Social and Family Development. Open to applicants over the age of 18, the course requires participants to have completed GCSE or achieved a Level 2 qualification.
In addition to this new initiative, the Ministry recently conducted an online sign language training programme for staff of government institutions and companies. More than 130 participants from various agencies completed the training, aimed at improving services for hearing-impaired clients.
Officials also confirmed that preparations are underway to launch an advanced online course in sign language. The Ministry said the move reflects its continued commitment to increasing awareness and fostering greater accessibility for people with hearing impairments across the country.
