His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has embarked on an official visit to the People’s Republic of China on Friday, following an invitation from His Excellency President Xi Jinping, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

During the visit, President Dr. Muizzu is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping and other foreign leaders. Additionally, he will engage in high-level discussions throughout the SCO Summit. A highlight of his participation will be delivering a statement at the SCO Plus meeting, where he will emphasize the significance of multilateral cooperation in tackling global issues such as climate change, economic fragmentation, and rising geopolitical tensions.

The SCO, established in 2001, is a regional organization focused on political, economic, and security matters in Eurasia. Initially formed by six nations—China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan—the SCO has since grown into the world’s largest regional organization in terms of geographic scope and population. It now includes 10 member states, with additional countries participating as observers or dialogue partners. The Maldives is one of the dialogue partners of the SCO.
