Maafaru International Airport (MIA) reached a historic milestone on Tuesday with the successful landing of its first wide-body aircraft, marking a significant leap forward in the airport’s operational and infrastructural capabilities.
An Emirates Boeing 777, supported by the Abu Dhabi Fund, landed at MIA as part of a comprehensive certification process aimed at evaluating the airport’s preparedness to accommodate larger commercial aircraft. The landmark trial reflects ongoing efforts to transform Maafaru into a major aviation hub in the Maldives.
The certification phase includes rigorous assessments of runway strength and capacity, ground handling operations—including refuelling, cargo, and passenger services—and inspections of navigation systems and air traffic control protocols to ensure full compliance with international aviation standards.
Key to this progress is the extension of MIA’s runway from 2.2 km to 2.8 km, allowing for safe operations of wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777. Additionally, the airport’s apron has been expanded, increasing parking capacity from 13 to 26 aircraft.
In recent years, Maafaru has emerged as a crucial private aviation hub, recording 98 private jet movements in 2024, ranking just behind Velana International Airport. It continues to play a vital role in connecting high-end tourists to luxury resorts such as Velaa Private Island, Soneva Jani, and Cheval Blanc Randheli.
The Emirates trial flight signals a transformative step in Maafaru’s growth, as the airport aims to expand its commercial flight capacity and further boost the Maldives' high-value tourism sector.
