President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on all citizens to take pride in the progress and growth of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), stating that such advancements are essential to safeguarding the nation's independence and sovereignty.
Speaking at the 133rd Army Day celebration held this evening at Kaluthukkala Koshi, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of building a strong, capable military, providing adequate facilities, and ensuring modern training and equipment for the armed forces.
The President stated that those who oppose efforts to strengthen the armed forces lack patriotism, suggesting they are at risk of “falling into slavery.” He declared that from the day he assumed office on November 17, 2023, to the present and beyond, his top priority remains to protect the country’s independence and sovereignty, with the MNDF as the main partner in that mission.
He underscored the strategic importance of the Maldives, noting that 99% of its territory lies in the ocean and emphasized that a small land area is not a justification for neglecting defence. President Muizzu also highlighted the government’s recent efforts to end the non-protection of the country's vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and hinted at future plans for creating distinct divisions within the armed forces, including an Air Force, Navy, and Army.
President Muizzu also said that strengthening the military aligns with the administration’s "neighbourhood policy", reinforcing the Maldives' regional posture and resilience.
The remarks come amid broader government efforts to modernize defence infrastructure and expand military capacity to meet evolving regional and global security challenges.
