United States Vice President JD Vance has arrived in India for a four-day visit, marking a significant moment in the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations. Vance’s visit aims to advance trade negotiations, particularly in light of US tariffs, and solidify relations with the administration of President Donald Trump.

On the first day of his visit, Vance met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the Indian leader greeted him warmly with a hug at his residence in New Delhi. Photos of the meeting were released by the Indian government.

The visit is centered around discussions on the bilateral trade agreement, which is part of the wider trade talks that began earlier this year after Modi’s meeting with Trump at the White House in February. The United States is India's largest trading partner, and the two countries are working to negotiate a trade deal with the aim of doubling trade to $500 billion by 2030.

This visit comes amidst heightened tensions in global trade, with President Trump’s administration having recently imposed 26% tariffs on India before later pausing them for 90 days. The pause was framed as part of a broader strategy to secure better trade deals with key partners like India.

Additionally, the meeting also coincides with the escalating trade war between the US and China, India's regional rival, further emphasizing the strategic importance of the India-US relationship.

The discussions between Vance and Modi are expected to focus on strengthening the India-US strategic partnership, reviewing the progress of bilateral relations, and addressing regional and global developments that are of mutual interest. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Vance’s visit is expected to “further deepen the India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership.”

This marks Vance’s first official visit to New Delhi since he became vice president in January, and it underscores the growing significance of the India-US relationship in the context of global trade and security concerns.
