Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool's towering Dutch centre-back, has extended his stay at Anfield until 2027, bringing an end to months of speculation regarding his future. The 33-year-old has been instrumental in Liverpool’s defence since his arrival in 2017 for a world-record fee for a defender, reportedly around 75 million pounds ($99m).
In a statement released by the club, van Dijk expressed his delight at committing his future to Liverpool, saying, “It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.”
“I’ve always known it was Liverpool. That was always in my head, always the plan, and it was always Liverpool,” he continued. “There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”
This contract extension follows the signing of Mohamed Salah, who also committed to Liverpool until 2027, bolstering manager Arne Slot’s plans ahead of the close season.
With Liverpool in a strong position to win their second Premier League title and 20th overall—13 points clear of Arsenal with just six games left—van Dijk’s renewed commitment provides a sense of stability and optimism heading into a pivotal period for the club.
Liverpool's Pursuit of Reinforcements
This extension also allows Liverpool to shift their focus toward strengthening their squad in the upcoming transfer window, as they aim to build on a successful season. The combination of van Dijk's leadership and the club's ambition to maintain their dominance in both domestic and European football will be central to their plans for the future.
