First Lady Sajidha Mohamed Files Legal Cases Over Remarks Targeting Her Son During MDP Protest

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has initiated legal proceedings in response to comments made about her son, Umyr Mohamed Muizzu, during a protest organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) earlier this year.

In a statement released by Rehendhi Chambers LLP, it was confirmed that two separate cases have been filed—one at the Civil Court and the other at the Family Court. The legal action stems from remarks made by political activist Mariyam Zubair during an MDP-led protest in March, which the First Lady’s legal team argues posed a threat to the child’s safety, education, and wellbeing.

The Civil Court case centers on defamation and the constitutional right to protect one’s name and dignity. Meanwhile, the Family Court case invokes the Child Rights Protection Act and international conventions on child protection, underscoring the principle that children must be shielded from harm and political exploitation.

Named in the legal proceedings are Mariyam Zubair, the Maldivian Democratic Party, and the party’s Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail.

Acting in her capacity as a mother and legal guardian, the First Lady emphasized the importance of setting legal precedent to ensure children of public figures are protected from being dragged into political rivalries.

“These measures are not just about one child,” the statement read. “They are about reinforcing a fundamental principle: that all children, regardless of their background, deserve dignity, safety, and protection—especially in politically charged environments.”

The cases have drawn public attention as a significant stand against the politicization of children and may set the tone for future legal boundaries in political discourse within the Maldives.
