Ibrahim Faisal, the Tourism Minister in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, has been dismissed from his position, the President’s Office confirmed on Tuesday. Faisal, appointed on November 17, 2023, was among the original members of President Muizzu’s cabinet.

The dismissal follows growing criticisms over Faisal’s tenure, though the President’s Office declined to provide specific reasons for the decision. Until a replacement is named, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has been tasked with overseeing the Tourism Ministry.

Criticism and ControversyFaisal, the son of Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of Parliament and Chairperson of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), faced allegations of nepotism upon his appointment. Opposition leaders questioned the decision, accusing President Muizzu of favoritism, though the government never formally addressed these claims.

Further scrutiny emerged regarding Faisal’s proficiency in the English language, a skill deemed essential for a portfolio like tourism. Acknowledging the criticism, Faisal admitted his limitations and announced efforts to improve by hiring a language coach. Despite this, he maintained that his linguistic ability did not affect his capability to perform his duties.

Faisal’s ResponseSpeaking to Sun, Faisal confirmed his dismissal and expressed his intention to take on a more active role in politics moving forward.

Political Friction within PNCFaisal’s dismissal comes amid reports of internal tensions between President Muizzu and PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla. Sources suggest that disagreements among the party's top leadership could have played a role in the decision.

The development leaves the Tourism Ministry, a critical portfolio for the Maldives, temporarily under the leadership of Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, as the government works to identify a new appointee.
