President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Third Amendment to the Anti-Corruption Commission Act (Act No. 13/2008), bringing notable changes to the appointment and resignation procedures for the leadership of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The amendment was passed by the People’s Majlis during its 53rd session of the 20th Parliament on Monday, November 25, 2024.
Under the revised Act, the President of the Maldives will now appoint the President and Vice President of the ACC from its existing members. These appointments are contingent on approval by a majority vote of members present and voting in a parliamentary session, ensuring parliamentary oversight in the process.
The amendment also revises the resignation protocol for the ACC’s leadership. The President and Vice President of the Commission must now submit their resignation in writing directly to the President of the Maldives.
Additionally, the amendment safeguards institutional continuity by allowing the current President and Vice President of the ACC to remain in their positions unless legally removed.
The changes took effect immediately upon ratification and publication in the Government Gazette.
This amendment reflects the administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance the accountability and governance of key institutions, reinforcing the Maldives’ commitment to combating corruption and upholding integrity.
