President Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to address the housing shortage in Malé, saying that everyone in the capital will have access to permanent housing by 2028.

The President made the remarks while speaking during the second episode of his "Rayyithunge Adu (People's Voice)" series, where residents raised concerns about the ongoing housing difficulties faced by people living in the city.

Several residents who met with President Muizzu said they had lived in Malé for many years but had yet to secure a home of their own. Some said they had moved to the capital a long time ago and did not own land elsewhere in the country, leaving them dependent on rental housing.

The high cost of rent was also highlighted as a major concern, with residents saying the shortage of private housing has made it increasingly difficult for families to find affordable accommodation.

Responding to the concerns, President Muizzu said his administration is working to find long-term solutions to the country’s housing challenges. He said new housing projects will be developed in Malé as well as in the atolls as quickly as possible.

Muizzu also assured residents that government housing projects would not be influenced by individuals or outside interests, adding that the situation would improve significantly compared to previous years.

The President further said that more housing units would be available in Malé by 2028 and that he would make every effort to provide housing to as many people as possible.

The government’s housing plans are aimed at easing the pressure caused by limited housing availability, rising rents and the growing demand for affordable homes in the capital.
