The Parliamentary Group (PG) of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) announced in a press conference last night that despite their initial intention to support the approval of most cabinet ministers, many of their MPs now hold a different view following the events in parliament yesterday.

Despite multiple attempts to proceed with the session for cabinet approval yesterday, disruptions and clashes between MPs from both sides prevented it.

Addressing the press conference, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem described the events of yesterday as

He emphasized that parliamentary proceedings should remain free from external influence, yet yesterday's events indicated otherwise, suggesting interference from powerful figures.

Regarding the matter of cabinet approval, Saleem stressed that MPs have the right to decide how they will vote, emphasizing that MDP's decision is independent and any attempt to sway it unlawfully is unacceptable.

Saleem expressed confusion over the reasons behind halting yesterday's parliamentary sittings, affirming MDP's readiness to address cabinet approval in accordance with the law.

He clarified that the Government Oversight Committee's decision to approve President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet members was based solely on whether they met legal requirements. Saleem emphasized that this decision is subject to discussion in parliament.

MP Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeq of Velidhoo constituency alleged that pro-government MPs obstructed yesterday's session and later visited the President's Office.

MDP PG Leader Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey) highlighted that delays in cabinet approval are primarily caused by pro-government MPs.

Another parliamentary session is scheduled for 13:00 hrs today to vote on the approval of cabinet members.
