Former Maldivian sprint star Mohamed Amir has added another remarkable chapter to his distinguished athletics career by winning a gold medal at the 38th Malaysian International Masters Athletics Championship 2026.

Competing in the men's 55-59 age group 200m event, Amir sprinted to victory to secure his first international masters gold medal and continue a legacy that has spanned more than three decades.

Amir is widely regarded as one of the greatest sprinters in Maldivian athletics history. He represented the Maldives from 1990 to 2003 and held national records in all three sprint events during his career. He set the national 200m record in 1993, the 400m record in 1995, and the 100m record in 1998.

His achievements on the international stage include representing the Maldives at two Olympic Games—1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta—as well as competing at the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris.

After returning to international competition in masters athletics, Amir continued to make history. In 2024, he won the Maldives' first-ever masters athletics medal when he secured a silver medal in the men's 55-59 age group 400m event at the Bangladesh International Open Masters Athletics Championship.

He followed that achievement with a silver medal in the men's 55-59 age group 200m at the 2025 Sri Lankan National Masters Athletics Championship and a bronze medal in the same event at the 2026 edition.

Now, the veteran sprinter has climbed to the top of the podium with a two gold medal in Malaysia, 100m and 400m events marking another milestone in an already illustrious career.

Speaking after his victory, Amir said he was proud to represent the Maldives on the international stage once again.

"I feel proud to represent the Maldives. Winning a gold medal internationally is a dream come true. This is only the beginning, and there is much more to come," he said.

Amir's latest success serves as an inspiration to athletes of all ages and demonstrates that dedication, passion, and commitment can continue to produce results long after an athlete's peak competitive years.

For one of Maldives' greatest-ever sprinters, the journey continues—and so does the pursuit of excellence.
