The second edition of Raaraa Pro, the Maldives’ premier kiteboarding competition, officially kicked off yesterday in K. Dhiffushi. The six-day event brings together a dynamic mix of local and international riders for an action-packed week of high-stakes competition, youth development, and community festivities.

The prestigious event was officially inaugurated by Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC). Speaking at the opening ceremony, Shiuree emphasized VMC's strategic focus on expanding the country's travel appeal beyond traditional luxury.

"The Maldives is globally recognised for its natural beauty, but we are also a destination with tremendous potential for sports and adventure tourism," Shiuree stated. "Events such as Raaraa Pro help showcase the diversity of experiences available across our islands while creating opportunities for local communities, youth engagement, and tourism development."

Organized by Iconic Events, with VMC stepping in as the Destination Collaboration Partner, the competition builds on the massive success of its 2025 debut. Running from June 1 to June 6, 2026, this year's edition has expanded its horizons. In addition to the high-speed slalom racing format, organizers have introduced a freestyle kiteboarding category, opening the doors for athletes across various disciplines and skill levels to showcase their gravity-defying tricks.

This year's event ambassador is prominent local rider Visaam Mohamed (Thotho), who secured a third-place podium finish last year and has returned with a formidable team of 12 riders to boost local competitive spirit.

To foster the next generation of Maldivian water sports athletes, the event features a specialized kiteboarding clinic for children, led by seasoned professionals covering water safety, equipment handling, and foundational skills. Furthermore, the introduction of a new digital live-scoring platform allows spectators on the beach and fans worldwide to track results in real time.

Beyond the adrenaline on the water, Dhiffushi has been transformed into a vibrant eco-festival hub. The event grounds feature local art and food stalls, interactive trivia sessions, and evening beachside movie screenings designed to integrate and benefit the local island community.

Safety remains a top priority for the expanding event. Comprehensive on-water and onshore safety networks have been established with direct support from the Maldives Police Service and the Dhiffushi Health Centre. A dedicated water safety team equipped with lifeguards, a speedboat, and two jet skis is active throughout the heats, overseen by a newly formed athlete committee ensuring rigorous pre-race safety briefings.

As the wind picks up in Dhiffushi, Raaraa Pro 2026 stands out as a benchmark for the Maldives' growing niche tourism sector, successfully positioning the sunny side of life as a world-class destination for active, experiential, and community-based travel.
