President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that responsible journalism is a vital catalyst for citizen empowerment and the primary vehicle for ensuring a transparent and accountable democratic environment.

In an address marking World Press Freedom Day, the President conveyed his deep appreciation for the dedication of Maldivian media professionals, acknowledging their role as the "fourth estate" and a crucial link between the state and the people. He noted that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right highly regarded within Islamic principles, it must be exercised within ethical boundaries that safeguard human dignity, societal interests, and national security.

The President reaffirmed that establishing a safe and conducive environment for the press has been a core priority of his Administration from the outset. He highlighted that the ongoing Maldives 2.0 initiative will further evolve the nation's information ecosystems, ensuring that the relationship between technology and civil liberties remains balanced. Beyond legal protections, President Muizzu stressed the importance of strengthening journalism as a sustainable profession. He stated that the government is actively working to address structural challenges, such as the operational viability of media outlets in a small market, while simultaneously investing in the academic development of a new generation of skilled journalists.

In a message shared with the international community, President Muizzu also recognized the global effort required to defend the right to information and press freedom. He asserted that independent journalism is essential for maintaining a responsive democratic system and safeguarding the factual information necessary for national progress. By promoting open public discourse and fulfilling administrative pledges to the media sector, the President reiterated the Maldives' commitment to building an informed and resilient society, ultimately encouraging journalists to continue their essential service with unwavering integrity.
