The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that asphalt layering for Segment 1 of Boduthakurufaanu Magu is scheduled to begin in mid-November.
Segment 1 covers the stretch from the local market to the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building, spanning approximately 130 metres. The project commenced on 21 August 2025, and MTCC aims to complete all works and open the road to the public by the end of this month.
According to MTCC Senior Project Manager Sharwas Abdulla Faiz, 80 per cent of the work on this segment has been completed. He noted that the utility and drainage systems are nearing completion, while additional works by Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and State Electric Company (STELCO) are still ongoing. Preparations for pavement construction are also underway.
The MVR 144.5 million project spans a total of 830 metres, extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the local market, and is being carried out in three phases. It includes the construction of a 737-metre coastal wall, expansion of the road to four lanes, the creation of new pedestrian areas, and the installation of a modern stormwater drainage system to prevent flooding during heavy rainfall.
Once completed, the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project is expected to significantly improve accessibility and safety in Malé City. The wider roads will help ease traffic congestion, while the enhanced pedestrian zones and upgraded drainage network will provide a safer, more resilient infrastructure for all road users.
