Visit Maldives Club, in partnership with Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), has officially announced the return of the Burunu Boma Global Sport Fishing Tournament, scheduled to take place from 13–15 June 2026. Following the success of its inaugural edition, the 2026 tournament aims to attract a larger number of both international and local teams, further solidifying the Maldives’ reputation as a premier destination for sustainable marine sports tourism.
Recognized as the Maldives’ biggest sport fishing event, Burunu Boma has swiftly gained global attention within the international angling community. The 2025 edition featured nine teams—one international and eight local—highlighting the Maldives’ growing prominence in world-class sport fishing and its commitment to sustainability through the ‘Catch and Release’ practice.
“The inaugural Burunu Boma was more than a competition; it demonstrated the Maldives’ capacity to diversify its tourism portfolio through global sporting events,” said Ibrahim Shiuree, Managing Director and CEO of Visit Maldives Corporation. “For the 2026 tournament, our goal is to expand participation, strengthen partnerships, and elevate the event into a permanent fixture in the global sport fishing calendar.”
Ahmed Saaif, President of Visit Maldives Club, added: “The success of this year’s event reflected the enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and unity of all participants and partners. As we prepare for 2026, we look forward to welcoming more teams, fostering greater collaboration, and delivering an even more exciting and memorable experience for anglers and spectators alike. I’m confident that next year’s event will be our most remarkable and successful one yet.”
The Burunu Boma Global Sport Fishing Tournament 2026 will run from 13–15 June, with the closing ceremony set for 17 June 2026. Details regarding registration and venue will be announced soon through official Visit Maldives platforms and the tournament microsite.
The 2025 tournament concluded with Team Dubai claiming the championship title and a grand prize of USD 25,000, marking an exciting milestone for the debut edition.
Through initiatives like Burunu Boma, Visit Maldives continues to promote the Maldives as a diverse, experience-driven destination. By highlighting marine sports and sustainable practices, the event supports the nation’s broader vision to enhance its global appeal beyond traditional luxury tourism.
