The Ministry of Education has introduced a monthly MVR 1,500 stipend for student teachers who commit to working in islands facing teacher shortages.
The scheme applies to students pursuing teaching degrees at Maldivian universities and colleges, with priority given to those training in primary teaching, Islam, and Dhivehi—fields currently in highest demand. Eligible students must be under 40 years old and enrolled after January 2025.
In addition, A-level students intending to pursue teaching will also receive the allowance, in a bid to draw more young people into the profession.
Education Minister Ismail Shafeeu earlier highlighted that the stipend programme is designed to encourage youth to join the teaching field and provide a long-term solution to the teacher shortage in island schools.
