The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national at Velana International Airport (VIA) on suspicion of illegally trading foreign currency.

The arrest was made on 16 September following intelligence reports that US dollars were being exchanged without authorisation near resort counters at the airport.

According to police, a search of the suspect led to the discovery of more than MVR 68,000, USD 1,700, and additional foreign currencies. Investigations also revealed that the individual had been living in the Maldives without valid documentation.

The Criminal Court has ordered a 15-day remand in custody as the Maldives Police Service continues its investigation into the case.
