The first batch of participants in the Maldives National Service Programme has departed, with 340 youths beginning their three-month training in Maafilaafushi, Lhaviyani Atoll.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the programme attracted 1,244 applications, and all those deemed fit will be given the chance to complete the training. The first phase in Maafilaafushi will see participants take part in structured exercises aimed at building discipline, resilience, and civic responsibility.
Regarded as a flagship youth initiative of the current administration, the programme is part of wider efforts to provide young Maldivians with structured training, educational opportunities, and platforms for civic engagement. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the National Service Programme will be held annually from 2025 onwards.
A legal framework to guide its implementation is currently being finalised, while participants are expected to receive a monthly allowance of around MVR 6,000.
