English Premier League champions Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a record British transfer fee, according to multiple reports.
The deal, worth around £130 million ($176m), was reported on Monday by outlets including The Athletic and The Telegraph. Isak is expected to undergo a medical before finalising a six-year contract with the Reds.
The 25-year-old forward had an outstanding Premier League campaign last season, scoring 23 goals – second only to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah – and helping Newcastle secure Champions League qualification.
Isak’s transfer follows a drawn-out saga marked by his expressed desire to join Liverpool, which saw him train separately from the Newcastle squad.
On Saturday, Newcastle moved to replace him by signing German striker Nick Woltemade for a record club fee of up to £69 million ($93m), effectively clearing the path for Isak’s departure.
The move eclipses the previous British record signings of Moisés Caicedo to Chelsea and Declan Rice to Arsenal, cementing Isak as the most expensive transfer in English football history.
