The Ministry of Health has officially launched Maldives SPECS 2030, a national initiative designed to enhance access to and the quality of optic health services across the country by the year 2030.

The strategy was unveiled during a ceremony held in Hulhumalé, marking a significant step in the country’s commitment to inclusive and integrated eye care. The programme aligns with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global framework on eye health and supports the Maldives’ efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly in the areas of health equity and service accessibility.

SPECS 2030 presents a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening the country’s ophthalmic service infrastructure. Key focus areas include:

  1. Infrastructure development for optic health service delivery
  2. Workforce training and recruitment of ophthalmologists and optometrists
  3. Improved access to refraction services, cataract treatment, and assistive technologies

The plan will be implemented in collaboration with WHO and will use the Eye Care Situation Analysis Tool (ECSAT) to assess the current landscape of eye care in the Maldives. The findings will help identify service gaps, challenges, and areas requiring targeted interventions.

Input from sector stakeholders will guide the development and rollout of the strategy to ensure it reflects ground realities and community needs.

According to the Ministry of Health, SPECS 2030 aims to establish a more resilient and inclusive eye care system, ensuring equitable access to essential vision services for all Maldivians, regardless of geographic location.

This long-term vision reflects the government’s commitment to building a healthier and more inclusive Maldives, with a strong emphasis on preventing avoidable vision impairment and promoting eye health nationwide.
