Health Ministry Signs Major Agreements to Expand Healthcare Services Across 18 Islands

In a significant step to enhance healthcare infrastructure in the Maldives, the Ministry of Health has signed agreements with three state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to develop and expand health centres across 18 islands. The contracts were awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Fenaka Corporation, and Road Development Corporation (RDC) during a ceremony held on Wednesday.

These initiatives are part of the Government’s broader strategy to improve healthcare access and quality in the atolls.

MTCC Projects:MTCC will undertake projects in five islands, which include expansions and new health centre buildings:

  1. Haa Alifu Uligan – Expansion of Health Centre
  2. Dhaalu Hulhudheli – Expansion of Health Centre
  3. Haa Dhaalu Kumundhoo – Construction of a new Health Centre building
  4. Alifu Dhaalu Omadhoo – Construction of a new Health Centre building
  5. Raa Innamaadhoo – Expansion of Health Centre

Fenaka Corporation Projects:Fenaka Corporation has been contracted to develop healthcare facilities across nine islands:

  1. Haa Alifu Thakandhoo – Expansion of Health Centre
  2. Haa Alifu Muraidhoo – Expansion of Health Centre
  3. Haa Alifu Molhadhoo – Construction of a new Health Centre building
  4. Haa Dhaalu Neykurendhoo – Expansion of Health Centre
  5. Raa Kinolhas – Expansion of Health Centre
  6. Raa Maduvvari – Construction of a new Health Centre building
  7. Raa Fainu – Expansion of Health Centre
  8. Dhaalu Rinbudhoo – Expansion of Health Centre
  9. Raa Rasmaadhoo – Expansion of Health Centre

RDC Projects:RDC will carry out hospital construction and health centre upgrades in four islands:

  1. Raa Meedhoo – Construction of a new Hospital building
  2. Haa Alifu Filladhoo – Expansion of Health Centre
  3. Gaafu Alifu Dhaandhoo – Construction of a new Hospital building
  4. Meemu Mulah – Expansion of Health Centre

Additionally, the Ministry noted that several health centres are already under development to enhance healthcare service delivery across the country. The government is also focused on elevating three atoll hospitals to tertiary-level facilities:

  1. MTCC is spearheading the upgrade of Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital and Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital.
  2. RDC is overseeing the upgrade of Lhaviyani Naifaru Hospital.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, officials emphasized that these projects reflect the government’s commitment to equitable access to quality medical care throughout the Maldives, especially in remote island communities.
