Male’ City Council has decided to prohibit the use of betel nut products at all official ceremonies and events, a move aimed at safeguarding public health. The decision was reached during a general meeting held today, following a proposal submitted by the Cancer Society of Maldives.
Mayor Adam Azim announced the council’s firm commitment to completely eliminate betel nut consumption from all its functions, emphasizing the importance of this step for the well-being of the community.
The resolution received strong backing from Deputy Mayor Mohamed Areesh and other council members, many of whom highlighted the serious health risks associated with betel nut use. Council members welcomed the ban as a forward-thinking initiative to promote a healthier environment at official gatherings.
As a result of this decision, Male’ City Council will ensure that no betel nut products are present at any of its events moving forward.
