Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has confirmed the detection of a Multi-Drug Resistant Organism (MDRO) in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), raising concerns over hospital-acquired infections.

In a public statement issued via social media platform X, the hospital announced that the bacteria, known for its resistance to multiple antibiotics, was discovered during routine monitoring. IGMH explained that such organisms can sometimes emerge in medical settings where vulnerable patients receive care.

“This type of bacteria can cause dangerous infections that are not responsive to common antibiotics,” the hospital stated, emphasizing the potential risk it poses.

Upon identification of the organism, IGMH said it immediately implemented strict infection control protocols to prevent further spread. The hospital assured the public that, as of now, no infants or healthcare workers have been infected by the bacteria.

IGMH pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely and stated that additional information will be released in due course.

The discovery of MDROs in clinical environments is a global concern, as these organisms significantly limit treatment options and pose serious challenges to public health and hospital safety.
