A senior Russian military official, Lieutenant-General Yaroslav Moskalik, has been killed in an explosion that tore through a parked car in the town of Balashikha, east of Moscow. The blast occurred on Friday and is believed to have been caused by a homemade explosive device, according to Russia's Investigative Committee, which handles major criminal cases.

Moskalik, who served as the deputy head of the main operational directorate of the Russian military's General Staff, was the victim of the attack. The explosion took place outside a block of flats, where a Volkswagen Golf was reported to have blown up. The Investigative Committee stated that the device was filled with destructive elements.

The authorities have launched a probe into the incident, though no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to Russian newspaper Kommersant, a second person was also killed in the explosion. This attack appears to be similar to previous incidents targeting individuals associated with Moscow's military actions in Ukraine.
