Kimi Antonelli made Formula 1 history at the Chinese Grand Prix by claiming his first career victory in a composed and impressive performance for Mercedes at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The 19 year old Italian started the race from pole position and controlled the event for much of the afternoon, eventually crossing the line ahead of teammate George Russell to secure a dominant Mercedes one two finish. The victory makes Antonelli the second youngest race winner in Formula 1 history, behind only Max Verstappen.

Antonelli showed remarkable composure throughout the race, managing his tyres and pace while keeping Russell behind during the crucial phases of the event. Despite a brief late scare with a lock up, the young Mercedes driver maintained control and finished several seconds clear to seal a memorable maiden win.

Russell finished second to complete a superb result for Mercedes, continuing the team’s strong start to the 2026 season after winning the opening race in Australia. The result also keeps Russell firmly in the championship fight as the early title battle begins to take shape.

Lewis Hamilton finished third to secure his first podium for Ferrari, marking an important milestone in his debut season with the Scuderia. The seven time world champion was involved in an intense fight with teammate Charles Leclerc during the race, eventually holding on to third place after a tense final stint.

The race also saw several dramatic moments across the grid. Both McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, were unable to start due to technical issues with their cars before the formation lap. Meanwhile, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen endured a difficult weekend and later retired from the race after struggling for pace and reliability.

Antonelli was visibly emotional after the race, breaking down in tears over the team radio as he celebrated the biggest moment of his young career. His victory not only confirms his status as one of Formula 1’s brightest rising stars but also strengthens Mercedes’ position as the team to beat early in the 2026 season.

With Mercedes now securing victories in the opening races of the season and Antonelli joining Russell as a race winner, the championship battle is beginning to take shape as Formula 1 heads to the next round of the 2026 campaign.
