Fernando Alonso will miss media duties ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix as he prepares for a major personal milestone, with the Aston Martin driver expecting the birth of his first child.
The two time world champion has delayed his arrival to Suzuka in order to be with his family, with the due date falling during the race week. As a result, Alonso will not take part in the traditional Thursday media sessions, where drivers normally meet the press before the on track action begins.
Despite his absence on media day, Alonso is still expected to participate in the competitive sessions. The Spanish driver is scheduled to arrive in time for Friday running and will take part in the remainder of the weekend, including qualifying and the race.
Aston Martin had already planned for Alonso to sit out the opening practice session, with reserve driver Jak Crawford set to take over the car for FP1 as part of the team’s rookie running programme. Alonso is then expected to return to the cockpit from the second practice session onwards.
The team has confirmed that there are no concerns regarding Alonso’s participation beyond the initial delay, and that his absence is purely for personal reasons as he prepares to welcome his first child.
The situation highlights a rare and special off track moment for one of Formula 1’s most experienced drivers, as Alonso balances his professional commitments with an important chapter in his personal life.
With Alonso set to return in time for the key sessions, attention will soon shift back to the track at Suzuka, where Aston Martin will be aiming to build on their early season performances in the 2026 campaign.
