M. Muli Airport, the first of its kind in Meemu Atoll, has successfully completed its construction, with a test flight landing at the newly-built airport today. The Dash-8 aircraft of the national airline, Maldivian, made its inaugural landing this afternoon, carrying a high-level government delegation as part of the test flight operations.
The event attracted a large crowd of local residents, who gathered to witness this historic moment for their island. The test flight is a routine procedure to assess the airport’s readiness before commercial operations begin, and according to the regional airports company, all necessary evaluations have been completed.
The airport is now set for its official opening, scheduled to coincide with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Meemu Atoll next week. The Muli Airport project, which was handed over to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in February 2021, has been a significant development for the atoll. The project includes the reclamation of 14 hectares of land, coastal protection measures, and the construction of a 1,200-meter-long runway, taxiway, and apron.
With the completion of this important infrastructure, M. Muli Airport is set to enhance connectivity and bring greater opportunities to the residents of Meemu Atoll.
