The Maldives Customs Service has successfully seized a large shipment of 130,155 cigarettes being smuggled into the country through Addu Gan International Airport. The cigarettes were confiscated last night, as confirmed by a post shared by Customs on X.
The authorities have not provided additional details regarding the brand of cigarettes or the identities of those involved in the smuggling attempt.
This seizure comes amid ongoing investigations by both the police and the Parliament's 241 Committee into various cigarette smuggling cases in the Maldives. One notable case under investigation involves 200 master cartons of Manchester cigarettes that were smuggled into the country by a boat from Hawks company. While the cigarettes were initially seized by Customs, they mysteriously went missing from custody, prompting further investigation.
Authorities continue to probe both incidents, and updates are expected as investigations progress.
