Nasheed Proposes Alliance Between MDP and The Democrats

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for a political alliance between the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats, stating it would be the best course for both parties and the nation.
“I think the best option for Maldives, MDP and The Democrats at the moment is to form an alliance between MDP and The Democrats,” Nasheed posted on X.
His remarks follow speculation that senior figures from The Democrats are rejoining MDP, and growing interest within the party over its 2028 presidential ticket. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, a potential contender, has yet to comment on his plans.
Nasheed, a founding member of both MDP and The Democrats, left MDP in June 2023 after a fallout with then-President Solih. At the time, he pledged to “dismantle” MDP and was widely seen as undermining its election chances.
The Democrats ran in the first round of the 2023 presidential elections but failed to make an impact, and the party also failed to win seats in the parliamentary elections held earlier this year.
