The Ministry of Higher Education has opened applications for the government’s higher education loan scheme, offering 500 opportunities for students pursuing studies in the Maldives and abroad.

According to the ministry's announcement, the loan scheme caters to two categories of students: new applicants beginning their higher education and continuing students seeking top-up loans. The top-up loan option is available for amounts not exceeding MVR 700,000.

The top-up loans are designed to assist students who could not complete their programs within the stipulated timeframe due to reasons beyond their control. This includes those requiring additional support under the Higher Education and Training Loan Assistance program and students who need to complete required internships related to their studies.

  1. New Students – Those who have not registered at a higher education institution or paid tuition fees by the application deadline.
  2. Top-Up Loan Recipients (Continuing Students) – Those who commenced their studies before the application deadline.

The deadline for loan applications is April 30, 2025.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recently announced a significant relief for loan recipients by eliminating the 1% administrative fee currently charged during student loan repayments. This decision is expected to ease the financial burden on students and graduates.

For more details and application submissions, students are advised to visit the Ministry of Higher Education’s official website.
