Maldives Introduces Digital Cash Waqf

News
Ahmed Shurau

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has introduced a new avenue for individuals seeking to earn continuous rewards even after death by launching the opportunity to invest in the Religious Waqf Fund through cash waqf. In collaboration with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the initiative enables both locals and foreigners to contribute easily via the VaaruPay platform, bringing the spiritual and communal benefits of waqf closer to the people through a convenient digital method.

Inspired by the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), where he said: “When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him” (narrated by Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him), this initiative reinforces the powerful concept of Sadaqah Jariyah, an act of charity that continues to benefit a person in the afterlife.

Cash waqf, a form of waqf (Islamic endowment), allows individuals to dedicate monetary contributions for religious and community welfare purposes. Unlike physical waqf such as land or buildings — cash waqf enables even small contributions to be invested and grown under the management of a regulatory body. The resulting profits are then channeled toward initiatives that please Allah, such as mosque development, Quran education, and other religious services that benefit the public.

What makes cash waqf particularly accessible is the flexibility it offers: individuals can make waqf contributions in their own name, or on behalf of their parents, family members, or loved ones. It is a deeply meaningful way to honour those we love and seek blessings for them in the hereafter.

Through this new mechanism, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs has successfully laid the foundation for an institutionalized cash waqf system in the Maldives. By partnering with MIRA and integrating the process into VaaruPay, making a waqf contribution is now only a few clicks away, simple, secure, and open to everyone, including those living abroad.

For those who wish to contribute to this noble cause and invest in their hereafter, cash waqf donations can be made through the following link: Cash Waqf via VaaruPay.
