On February 28, 2025, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, representing the Republic of Maldives, has filed the written observations of the Maldives in the ongoing case of The Gambia v. Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Gambia initiated proceedings against Myanmar on November 11, 2019, accusing Myanmar of violating the Genocide Convention through acts committed against the Rohingya Muslim population.
The Maldives later intervened in the case by submitting a Declaration of Intervention, which the ICJ deemed admissible on July 3, 2024, under Article 63(2) of the ICJ Statute. The Court subsequently invited the Maldives to submit its written observations regarding its intervention.
In its submission, the Maldives focused on the interpretation of key provisions of the Genocide Convention, particularly Articles I, IV, V, and VI, which emphasize the duty to prevent and punish genocide.
The Maldives reaffirmed its commitment to upholding international justice and ensuring the enforcement of the Genocide Convention, continuing its efforts to support the global fight against genocide and impunity.
