The announcement was made during his visit to Utheemu, as part of his three-day tour of North Thiladhunmathi Atoll.

Highlighting Utheemu's importance as the birthplace of the legendary Utheemu brothers, who valiantly led the resistance against Portuguese invaders centuries ago, the President underscored the island’s vital role in shaping the nation's identity. He emphasized the preservation of Utheemu's historic landmarks, such as the Utheemu Palace, as a priority for his Administration to safeguard the Maldives' heritage for future generations.

The President revealed that National Day celebrations would be held in Utheemu for two consecutive years, fostering national pride and consciousness. He described the island as a source of immense pride for all Maldivians and a cornerstone of the country’s heritage.

Dr. Muizzu also addressed ongoing development efforts in Utheemu, noting the initiation of several infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the island's facilities and services. He assured residents that Utheemu's development would remain a key priority and reiterated the Administration’s commitment to promoting equality and fairness in national progress.

During the visit, several significant events took place:

  1. Groundbreaking Ceremonies: The President officiated the foundation-laying for the new Utheemu Council Secretariat building and the police station. Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, and Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, participated in the respective ceremonies.
  2. Banking Services Expansion: An agreement was signed between the Utheemu Council and the Bank of Maldives (BML) to establish an ATM on the island, enhancing banking access for residents.

The President expressed his hopes to return to Utheemu to celebrate this year’s National Day with its people.

The visit to Utheemu marks the third stop on the President's tour of 10 islands in North Thiladhunmathi Atoll.
