Hassan Latheef has officially rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) following his resignation as president of The Democrats, a party formed in response to internal divisions within MDP ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

The Democrats, established by senior MDP leaders, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, aimed to address growing differences within the party. Latheef’s decision to step down from the leadership of The Democrats was followed by an announcement on Sunday, with the MDP welcoming his return to the fold the following day. The party expressed optimism about his renewed commitment to MDP’s values and future goals.

Latheef's return is accompanied by several other high-profile rejoiners from The Democrats. Among them are Hussain Amr, the former Managing Director of the State Trading Organisation (STO) under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Mohamed Shifaz, the former vice-presidential candidate of The Democrats in the recent election and ex-Minister at the President’s Office, and Ali Azim, a former Member of Parliament representing Central Henveiru.

These individuals were part of the faction led by Mohamed Nasheed, which emerged following disagreements within MDP during President Solih's administration. This development signifies a shift as key figures from The Democrats reunite with MDP, strengthening its political landscape.
