V. Rakeedhoo has become a shining example of the Maldives' commitment to renewable energy, with the successful launch of a cutting-edge hybrid system that blends solar power, battery storage, and a backup diesel generator. This new system now powers the island, using solar and battery storage to meet most of its energy needs while relying on the generator for just two hours each day.
The project, fully funded by STELCO, is a major step in the Maldives' goal to reach 33% renewable energy. It marks an important milestone not only for V. Rakeedhoo but for the whole country as it continues to push for more sustainable energy solutions.
Hussain Fahmy, Managing Director of STELCO, expressed deep appreciation for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership and vision in advancing renewable energy. “This project is a direct result of President Muizzu’s commitment to making the Maldives a leader in sustainable energy. It’s a huge step forward in our journey towards energy independence,” said Fahmy.
He also took a moment to clarify that this initiative is a fresh, independent effort, distinct from the previous ADB-funded renewable energy project, which faced significant challenges and was eventually dismantled. “This is a new beginning for renewable energy in the Maldives. We’re building something stronger, more sustainable, and aligned with our national energy goals,” Fahmy added.
The hybrid PV-BESS-DG system is not just an energy solution but a symbol of the Maldives' growing ability to balance modern energy needs with environmental responsibility. With V. Rakeedhoo leading the way, it’s clear that the Maldives is committed to a brighter, cleaner, and more sustainable future.
