The government of Maldives has unveiled plans to transform seven islands into urban centers as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's vision to promote balanced regional development and reduce population congestion in Malé.
The Housing Ministry announced that these urban centers will be established on the following islands:
- R. Ungoofaaru
- B. Eydhafushi
- Lh. Naifaru
- ADh. Mahibadhoo
- F. Nilandhoo
- Dh. Kudahuvadhoo
- L. Fonadhoo
These developments align with President Muizzu’s electoral pledge to decentralize growth and create integrated development zones in the north and south, fostering diverse economic and social hubs across the nation.
A supporting bill has already been submitted to parliament, aiming to lay the legislative foundation for establishing these urban centers. Currently under review by a joint committee comprising the National Development and Heritage Committee and the Decentralization Committee, the bill is expected to facilitate a more equitable distribution of resources and infrastructure across the Maldives.
This initiative signals a transformative approach in the Maldives' development strategy, as the administration seeks to bring enhanced services, employment opportunities, and economic resilience to regional populations.
