George Russell continued his impressive start to the 2026 Formula 1 season by winning the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, holding off a strong challenge from the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

Starting from Sprint pole, Russell initially lost the lead at the start when Hamilton made a lightning launch and surged past into Turn 1. The two drivers engaged in an intense early battle, exchanging the lead multiple times over the opening laps as the Ferrari driver pushed hard to stay ahead.

Russell eventually regained control of the race after the early exchanges and began to build a small advantage as Hamilton’s tyres began to fade. Ferrari’s Leclerc then moved into second place, positioning himself between Russell and his teammate as the Sprint settled into a tense strategic contest.

The 19 lap race was briefly neutralised by a safety car on lap 14 after Nico Hulkenberg stopped his Audi on track. The interruption erased Russell’s gap and set up a short but intense sprint to the finish once the race restarted.

Despite the pressure behind him, Russell kept calm during the final laps and crossed the line first to secure victory, finishing just 0.674 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with Hamilton completing the podium in third place. The result gave Ferrari a double podium but confirmed Mercedes’ early dominance in the new season.

Defending champion Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren, while Kimi Antonelli placed fifth for Mercedes after receiving a 10 second penalty for an incident with Isack Hadjar earlier in the race.

Further down the order, Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman completed the Sprint points positions, while reigning champion Max Verstappen endured a difficult race and finished outside the points in ninth place.

Russell’s victory means he remains unbeaten in competitive sessions this season and extends his early championship advantage as the Chinese Grand Prix weekend continues with qualifying and the main race still to come in Shanghai.
