President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized the importance of increasing greenery and planting trees as cost-effective and efficient solutions to combat environmental impacts. His remarks were shared in a social media post on the occasion of World Ozone Day (WOD), which this year is themed “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action.”

President Muizzu's message aligns with the Maldives' ongoing efforts to address climate change, particularly through the administration’s ambitious Five Million Trees Planting Programme, which was inaugurated by President Muizzu and First Lady Sajida Mohamed in June 2024, on World Environment Day. This initiative represents the largest tree plantation project ever launched in the Maldives and underscores the administration’s dedication to preserving the country’s fragile ecosystems.

The programme, a key component of the President’s environmental agenda, aims to plant five million trees across the nation as part of a broader strategy to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and safeguard the environment for future generations. President Muizzu reiterated that increasing greenery is a sustainable and impactful way to reduce environmental degradation, while also contributing to the global fight against climate change.

The Five Million Trees Planting Programme is a vital step towards fulfilling the Maldives' environmental goals, as the nation continues to lead in climate action and environmental protection on the international stage.
