President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has instructed relevant institutions to implement eight critical measures to enhance road safety and curb reckless driving. In a social media post shared on Friday evening, the President expressed his determination to enforce these measures, aiming to prevent further road accidents and reduce vehicle-related disturbances in residential areas caused by modified vehicles.

The eight measures outlined by the President are as follows:

  • Amendment of Laws: Strengthen regulations to penalize speeding and reckless driving, enforcing stricter nationwide actions to ensure safer roads for all.
  • Revocation of Drifting Permit: Immediate cancellation of the Hulhumalé Development Corporation’s (HDC) permit, issued on 19 October 2023, allowing drifting and racing in a designated area of Hulhumalé.
  • Vehicle Seizure: Confiscate the licenses of drivers who violate speed limits and impound their vehicles in police custody.
  • Regulation of High-CC Vehicles: Amend laws to prohibit the use of vehicles with specific engine capacities (horsepower) on public roads.
  • Ban on Noise-Producing Modifications: Prohibit the import of loud, noise-enhancing devices, such as modified silencers, to prevent public disturbances.
  • Installation of Speed Breakers and Cameras: Expedite the implementation of a plan by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to install speed breakers and detection cameras at 150 locations across Hulhumalé.
  • Graduated License System: Introduce a graduated licensing system with point deductions for traffic violations, creating a stricter framework for driving privileges.
  • Strengthened Law Enforcement: Enhance the Maldives Police Service's efforts to enforce traffic laws and regulations more rigorously.

President Muizzu stressed that these measures are crucial for maintaining safety on the roads and ensuring that reckless driving is curbed. He also highlighted that the results of these implementations will be closely monitored.
