Maldives Engages Prominently in 56th UN Human Rights Council Session

Geneva, 18 June 2024: The 56th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council commenced today in Geneva, Switzerland, marking the participation of the Maldives delegation led by Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed. Running until 12 July 2024, the session sets the stage for robust discussions on global human rights issues.

Aligning with national priorities and international responsibilities, the Maldives will deliver key statements across various agenda items. As a representative of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Geneva, the Maldives will address the Annual Panel on Adverse Impacts of Climate Change, underscoring the urgent need for technical assistance and capacity building. Additionally, in collaboration with the core group for Women in Diplomacy and Multilateralism, the Maldives will advocate for women’s equal participation within the multilateral system. Moreover, the delegation will contribute to discussions on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers through a cross-regional core group initiative.

Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed heads a distinguished delegation including Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Uza. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Maryam Fathika Fayaz, Second Secretary Aishath Rifga, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh from the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations Offices at Geneva.

The Maldives’ active participation underscores its commitment to advancing human rights, climate action, and gender equality on the global stage. As deliberations unfold, the Maldives seeks to contribute meaningfully to shaping international dialogue and policy on pressing human rights issues affecting vulnerable communities worldwide.
