Maldivian Sprinters Set Personal Bests at Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Team Maldives made an encouraging start to their athletics campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with several sprinters producing personal and season-best performances in the opening round of the 100 metres.

The Commonwealth Games, taking place from 23 July to 2 August, feature a Maldivian athletics delegation competing in individual sprint events, as well as the Women's 4×100m Relay and the Mixed 4×400m Relay.

Leading the men's team was Hassan Saaid, who delivered his fastest performance of the season in the 100m Round 1 Heat 9. He crossed the finish line in 10.77 seconds, finishing fifth in his heat and placing 51st overall out of 77 athletes.

The women's team also impressed with two athletes achieving personal bests.

Ziva Moosa Shafee produced one of the standout performances for Maldives, clocking a personal best of 12.09 seconds in Heat 4. She finished fifth in her race and ranked 35th overall among 52 competitors, marking an important milestone in her athletics career.

Ahnaa Nizaar also celebrated a new personal best, recording 12.19 seconds in Heat 7. She finished fifth in her heat and was placed 37th overall, continuing her steady progress on the international stage.

Meanwhile, Aishath Shabaa Saleem recorded a season-best time of 12.59 seconds in Heat 1. She also finished fifth in her race and ranked 44th overall, adding another encouraging result for Team Maldives.

Although the Maldivian athletes did not progress to the next round, their performances demonstrated significant improvement, with multiple personal and season-best times highlighting the continued development of athletics in the country.

Attention will now turn to the relay events, where the Women's 4×100m Relay Team and the Mixed 4×400m Relay Team will look to build on the momentum created by the team's impressive opening performances in Glasgow.
