The government’s ultimate goal stretches far beyond basic digitalization; the true objective is to construct a broader, highly intelligent state, declared the Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Hon. Mr. Ali Ihusaan.

The Minister shared this vision during his address at the official inauguration ceremony of the National AI and Data Competency Centre, also known as the Maldives AI Lab.

Defining an 'Intelligent State'

Minister Ihusaan elaborated that an intelligent state is one capable of rapid response, meticulous strategic planning, robust data utilization, and delivering completely reliable public services while strictly ensuring the security of its critical infrastructure.

Addressing potential ethical concerns, the Minister clarified that integrating artificial intelligence into governance does not mean replacing human judgment or abandoning administrative accountability.

Shifting from Tech Consumers to Creators

In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the Minister asserted that the Maldives must transition from being a passive consumer of foreign technology to an active developer and manager of its own digital solutions. This approach, he noted, is vital to prioritizing national interests and strengthening sovereign service delivery.

To facilitate this shift, the government is currently developing new legal frameworks and policies under its "Maldives 2.0" Digital Transformation agenda. These efforts are focused on establishing solid digital infrastructure alongside reliable cybersecurity protocols.

The newly inaugurated Maldives AI Lab is expected to play a cornerstone role in executing these strategies and driving the nation's sovereign artificial intelligence capabilities forward.
