George Russell claimed a hard fought Sprint race victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, but the win came wrapped in controversy as he and championship leading team mate Kimi Antonelli came to blows in a battle that has sent shockwaves through the Mercedes garage.

Russell resisted incredible pressure to hold on to the lead of the Canada Sprint, beating Lando Norris and a fiery Kimi Antonelli to victory after clashing with his Mercedes team mate.

The first cracks began to emerge in harmony between the Mercedes driver pairing at the start of Lap 6, with Antonelli closing up on the back of his team mate and making a move into Turn 1, only to be squeezed unceremoniously onto the grass through Turn 2. The pair nearly came to blows again when Antonelli made another passing attempt, getting alongside the sister Mercedes only to bounce across the grass again and lose out not only to Russell, but also to Norris.

Antonelli repeatedly darted off track and was forced to settle for third place behind a rapid Norris, despite multiple calls for Russell to be penalised after the pair banged wheels and the Italian was pushed onto the grass.

Norris took advantage of the work put into the Mercedes tyres to close right up on Russell, harassing him for the remainder of the 23 lap race while himself being harassed by Antonelli. There was another close fight a few seconds behind the leading trio, with Oscar Piastri sandwiched between the Ferrari pair, behind Lewis Hamilton but ahead of Charles Leclerc. Piastri then passed Hamilton for fourth on the final lap, adding a late twist to an already dramatic afternoon.

Russell's driving enraged Antonelli in Montreal, but it was Antonelli who Mercedes stepped in to admonish. Antonelli admitted the Sprint battle was "a bit frustrating in the moment," while Russell insisted from his side it was "good hard racing."

With the championship battle between these two team-mates intensifying by the lap, Sunday's Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve promises even more fireworks.
