Lando Norris delivered a sensational qualifying performance to take pole position for the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, edging out Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc in a tense final session. The McLaren driver produced a stunning lap of 1:16.241, giving him the perfect platform to strengthen his title charge heading into Sunday’s race.
Verstappen pushed hard but had to settle for second, just 0.081 seconds behind Norris, while Leclerc claimed third with a strong showing for Ferrari. Mercedes continued their consistent form with George Russell in fourth and Lewis Hamilton in fifth, both looking competitive throughout qualifying despite struggling for rear-end stability in the high-altitude conditions.
Championship leader Oscar Piastri endured a challenging session and will start sixth after a small error on his final flying lap cost him valuable time. Behind him, Kimi Antonelli impressed once again by placing seventh for Mercedes, showing maturity beyond his years.
The session was briefly halted after a red flag caused by a spin from Nico Hulkenberg, but once running resumed, it was Norris who emerged as the class of the field. His precision through the stadium section and commitment on the main straight drew cheers from the packed grandstands.
With the grid now set, attention turns to the race scheduled for 1:00 AM Maldives time on Monday. Strategy will be crucial as teams navigate the challenges of tyre degradation and overheating in the thin Mexican air. McLaren appear well-positioned, but Red Bull’s race pace remains strong, setting up what promises to be an exciting and unpredictable contest.
Norris, reflecting on his pole, said he was proud of how far the team has come. “We’ve worked incredibly hard, and to start from the front here feels amazing. The race will be tough, but we’re ready to fight for it.”
As the lights prepare to go out in Mexico City, fans can expect another dramatic chapter in a championship battle that shows no signs of slowing down.
