Palestinian journalist Saleh Aljafarawi has been killed by gunmen in Gaza City, according to reports from local journalists and international media outlets.
Footage verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad Agency showed Aljafarawi’s body, wearing a “press” flak jacket, in the back of a truck. The incident reportedly occurred amid clashes between Palestinian security forces and armed groups in the al-Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City.
Aljafarawi, aged 28, had been displaced from northern Gaza during the ongoing war. He gained widespread recognition for his videos documenting the conflict and had reportedly received multiple threats from Israel for his coverage.
His death adds to the growing toll on media professionals in Gaza, where more than 270 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023 — making it the deadliest conflict for journalists in modern history.
The killing has drawn renewed attention to the risks faced by journalists working in conflict zones and the urgent need for greater protection of media workers in Gaza.
